Description

The National Autistic Society (NAS)is the UK’s leading charity for people with an autistic spectrum disorder. We champion the rights and interests of all people with Autism and their families.
Our aim: The aim of the NAS is to improve the lives of those with autism*, either directly, through the provision of services, or indirectly, by influencing awareness, understanding and legislation.
Our Vision: We want a world where autism is understood and people with autism* have the support they need to ensure that their rights are upheld and that they have the same opportunities as others in society.
Our Mission: We champion the rights and interests of all people with autism* and aim to provide individuals with autism* and their families with help, support and services that they can readily access, trust and rely upon and which make a positive difference to their lives.

The Society works to achieve this by:
Developing the provision of services, working with purchasers, statutory bodies, parents and people with autism* to develop sustainable solutions.
Raising professional, political and public awareness and understanding of the needs of people with autism*, their families and carers.
Providing information services and practical support for people with autism*, their families and carers, either directly, in partnership with others, or through facilitating and supporting the work of others.
Informing and driving the legislative programme, both at Westminster and the devolved institutions, to ensure that government thinking reflects the needs and interests of those with autism*.
Campaigning and providing information to legislators and funding bodies to ensure that the needs of people with autism* are understood and that adequate funding for services is provided.
Providing information and encouraging and supporting research into the causes and effective management of autism*.
Sharing best practice across the organisation to ensure that employees and volunteers have an in-depth understanding of services provided.
Raising funds, through fees, grants and sponsorship and voluntary donations at the national, regional and local levels.

* On this page the term ‘autism’ is used to cover the whole range of development disorders which include classic autism and Asperger syndrome
