Description

Nottingham Black Families in Education (NBFE) provides support, advocacy and information to black families in Nottinghamshire. Aims to reduce the need for support by empowering parents to stabilise families. The Group provides: drop-in sessions, training events, networking opportunities, parent’s advocacy and fund raising social events. Open to all parents regardless of age, ability, sexuality and gender.

NBFE has been pro-active in the African / Caribbean community since 1998 in the area of educational matters. NBFE has been effective in raising standards and influential in policy making within schools.

NBFE are the lead organisation for parents, carers, young people and the community in dealing with issues relating to the educational concerns of their young people. NBFE have 70 members giving reassurance guidance and support to parents on a number of levels.

Other organisations are working partnership with NBFE in providing training and consultation for our parents, enabling them to support their children in advocacy and exclusion issues. Through this, young people and the wider family unit have benefited from NBFE.

NBFE have been effective in:
Working with schools addressing the concerns of parents and children
Assisting parents/families to empower them to work with school on issues of concern
Improving relationship between children, schools and parents
Supporting schools and parents to reduce the level of exclusion or young people at risk of exclusion
Assisting young people in achieving their goals through support provided by the mentoring program
Providing empathy and understanding for the community they serve

NBFE are the main vocal point for African / Caribbean people to come together to talk about their experiences and to discuss creative programs for young people within the education system.
